Major India biodiesel facility comes on line

    Posted by Giles Clark, London

Indian company Naturol Bioenergy Limited announced yesterday (10th October) that it will soon start production from its biodiesel facility at Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. The facility has an annual production capacity of 100,000 tons of biodiesel and 10,000 tons of pharmaceutical grade glycerin.

The company has invested a total of Rs 1.4bn ($35.6m), financed by equity investments from venture capital investors and term loans from banks and financial institutions. Naturol’s primary feedstock is crude palm oil, however, its biodiesel facility has a unique characteristic which, says the company, allows it to replace part of the feedstock with multiple grades of vegetable oils including fatty acid oils, reducing the cost of production.

Naturol has entered into long-term agreements with petroleum intermediaries for export to USA and EU countries. It is currently importing feedstock from Indonesia, Malaysia and Africa, the company plans to develop local feedstock through contract farming of Jatropha.

Speaking at the launch Mr. Bhaskar Chalasani MD & CEO said; “While the biodiesel technology and equipment were supplied by De Smet Ballestra Group of Belgium, the entire engineering design, procurement and erection of the plant was done by Naturol’s in-house project team. ”

He continued; “Naturol has the world's first and largest industrial scale acid esterification section enabling usage of fatty acids which is integrated seamlessly with other process centers and also has the ability to convert crude glycerin into Pharmaceutical grade glycerin. Naturol has also invested in creating the required infrastructure to scale upto 5 times and is actively planning a foray into value added products such as surfactants from renewable sources.”

The company said it aims to sustain its lead in the renewable industry for which it has begun a multi-pronged growth strategy involving capacity scale-up, product diversification and backward integration. “Naturol intends to raise funds in order to execute its expansion plans, the envisaged investment towards these projects is about USD 100 million which would be met by way of equity and debt (50 per cent each) ” revealed Mr. Bhaskar.

  • No matter how huge this company is????

We look forward  for some  answers for these reasonable questions!!!!

    1.What is the feedstock?

Is it a dependable palm oil?

2.The exact Tax structure on Biodiesel in the interest of users be explained.

3.What is the plan of this company in propogating B100 instead of partial or a dosage policy of the Oil Marketting companies.

Finally, we would like to see a real veichle running anywhere in this country with this huge company's fuel.........

I mean 100% run veichle to make us beleive that India is in the process of using Biodiesel.

  • Naturol follows a good model for bio-diesel.  They are a fully export oriented unit ,import palm and other such oil from Malaysia and Indonesia process it at their Kaikinada plant and export the bio-diesel to Europe via west asia.

Their plan is to subsitute the imported  palm oil with non-edible vegetable oils like Jatropha from India. For this they have set up nurseries for Naturol approved Jatropha varieties, distribute thes saplings and information to farmers. They also plan to enter into buy back arrangements with farmers for Jatropha seeds.

Thus the plan  of Naturol is well thought out, takes care of current situation and has a vision for the future.

  • Most of us have read the stories of D.1 and their by-products like Labland Biotech advocating for Jatropha and that too with big Scientists in their advisory panels and at last settling for a Trading like business to ensure their place in some stock exchanges!!!!!

Indeed the companies already in this Biodiesel business are after Fish oil and animal waste for their production on the one hand and few big guys are really after Palm imports to promote the interest of Malaysian economy whereas, not a single company in India could focus on the indigenous sources.

We the countrymen shall overcome the dependency factor first  before supoorting for export of (Palmdiesel) our efforts in the name of Import cum Re- export.

We also suggest these big companies be restricted in Jatropha or anyother oil seed plantations in case they import the feedstocks for Biodiesel.

Already the  Oilpalm have shut down the life of several oilseeds in this country and let us hope they do not repeat the same in this Biodiesel Industry.

Supporting such arrangements of Imports of OilPalm and Re-export of the same is nothing  but opening up a new era of dependency in fuel industry.

  • naturol  bioenergy  ltd ,as they are saying its EOU. in my opinion EOU  permission for vegitable oil  is  very difficult. As veg oil comes under negative list and mostly people will misuse the duty free import of veg oil and sell in local market. usually govt does not fix input out put norms for CPO or any edible oil for advance licence as well as EOU unit.

now as we know Crude palm oil(CPO) prices upto feb 2008 is above$800/mt. about 90% of malaysian biodiesel manufacturing company are closed down due to high prices of raw material ( as biodsiesel prices in international market is from $850-$900/mt). i dont know how this company manufacturing as well as exporting  biodiesel

in europe 70% plant are closed down, only in USA due to subsidy biodiesel plants are running ,otherwise all over the world biodiesel industry is in worst condition.

i think  naturol  bioenergy  ltd working is in doubt. i m sure in next two year they will issue an IPO in the share market ,will make money ,and after that god knows .

  • The concept of Biodiesel should be strictly to eliminate dependency factor.

If everyone go and knock the South Asian countries for Oilpalm then the impact will be very worse in the Edible segment first.

This is one of the reason in Indian Govt's policy in not allowing imports or use of any edible oils in making Biodiesel.

If someone is very specific about Palm oil, then its nothing but a kind of propogating the complete dependency on palm the one we face with OPEC.

Most of the Projects in India are immitative in nature while few promoters are eyeing for public money and the rest to grab Govt.lands and benefits without any intiative to advance the growth of this alternate fuel.

While U.S protects the interest of domestic farmers or feedstocks Indian Govt.does the negative one in promoting OILBOMB.

Its a double worry for an Indian to be dependent on edible and petroleum oils even after 60years of Independence.

None of the Biodiesel promoters in India are ever sincere in Indian feedstocks.

Its a matter of Listing in Stock exchanges in the name of Corporate that is all.

    Iam sure!

These guys may disappear from this Biodiesel Industry soon.

The Maximum Retail price of Diesel is Rs35/liter.Say 0.8USD.in India

The Cost of Refined Palm oil           is Rs55/liter Say  1.4USD in India

Well! its for the people of India to guess whether to support another imported stuff or to go for a indigenous crop in future.
