White Smoke When I Start Truck In The Morning

  • I have a 2005 DodgeRam and when I start it in the morning white smokes rolls out. Only have 34,000 miles on the truck. Last month had to replace one injector (under warranty) doesn't do it as bad but still does smoke some. When injector went out when driving the truck I left a black trail of smoke every where I went, doesn't do that any more. Has anyone else had this problem with the white smoke? I run B100.
  • Are you saying excessive white smoke? All diesels smoke, especially in the morning when you first start them up. I'd only be concerned if you get lots of smoke with any sort of frequency.
  • This truck didn't smoke before I started using B100 about a year ago. Yes it is excessive white smoke not just a couple of puffs. The truck runs great holds good pressure but I'm wondering what is causing the white smoke? Like I said before since the injector has been replaced its not as bad but would like to find out if any one has had this problem or  knows the cause. I know someone else using B100 in a dodge ram also and said he doesn't have any smoke. Please help me solve this mystery.

  • I dont know what exactly is causing this my cummins does this 2. To fix it put cabover camper on truck and hook to car trailer with 3 4x4 4 wheelers and a generator drive about 200+ miles of interstate and it will clean up and run better. I have to do this about 4 times a year to keep mine from white smoking.

  • Thanks for the replies. Brewer13104 I'm not sure what missing coolant has to do with exhaust smoke but will check anyway. BridelessRacing I'm glad you found out how to fix your problem but by the time I buy a cabover camper,car trailer, 3 - 4x4 wheeler,generator and drive 200 mi four times a year I think it would be cheaper to stick with #2 diesel fuel. lolllllllllllllllllllllll. Someone suggested that this could be excess fuel burn off. Any thoughts about this.              Thanks
  • What temp is it in the morning around you?

    How many miles did you have on the truck when you started running B100?

    Does this also happen when you start the truck in the evening to go home from work (or a similar "break" period)?

  • Anti freeze in the combustion chamber burns white.

     

    It generally means that you have a warped head. No diagnosis here just explaining the white stuff and antifreeze.

  • Sometimes I have to much watter in my WVO this will cause white smoke. It is more notiable when I first start the truck because watter has settled to the bottom of the tank. I had so much watter in the tank on 1 batch that when  I cranked the truck the next morning it didnt make it 1/2 a block. I pulled the turbo hose off had a neighbor crank my truck I kept it running by spraying JB80 into the turbo untill I had it warm and the watter had mixed with the WVO enough to run. This will make a white cloud when you stand on it But my pump is turned up and will make a black cloud if I run diesel.

    Yes, I have an 07 CTD. Use B20 most of the time.  On 2 occassions, have filled with B100 and both times the next morning I would smoke out the neighborhood with white smoke billowing out of the tail pipe.  The engine idles a little rough.  I let it warm up for a few minutes, still white smoke, drive off and after a couple miles the smoke clears. Same thing next morning.

    When I switch back to B20 or ULSD, it doesn't smoke.

  • Does no one have any ideas? Excessive white smoke?

    I buy B100 from a reputable manufacturer/supplier, the temperature is 50-80. I checked for antifreeze/warped heads, no problem. It just seems to blow the white smoke and run rough after it has been sitting and the engine cools.

    When I switch back to ULSD, it shows no sign of any white smoke. I have researched and read numerous other reports and forum posts, but none have come up with any solution, remedy or even a cause.

     Makes me want to forget trying to use Bio-diesel at all.

  • First thing I would do is changed the fuel filter.  If you have already done that I would inspect the fuel filter bowl/housing for water or gunk.  My ford powerstroke did this to me the other morning and it scared the heck out of me.  I think my incident was a result of cold weather 40 degrees with homebrewed B50, fouled fuel filter, dirty air filter.  I suspect that after your vehicle warms up it still runs just fine, because thats how mine was acting.  It could also be water content in the fuel.  I have also read that the newer model diesels have higher the injection pressures therefore are more finicky which higher viscocity fuels such as homebrewed biodiesel.

     

    So my recommendations: check filters, clean out filter housings, check glow plug relay, and run B20 during the winter. 

  • I used commercially made B100 Biodiesel; I buy at the plant.  So I should hope that higher water content in the fuel isn't a problem that I don't have from ULSD diesel. (The B20 that I buy is premixed at certain Shell stations in town.)

    I just filled up with ULSD and have no problems with white smoke or rough idling.

    I will run this ULSD out of my tank, then change the fuel filter and check the air filter.  (Clean the filter bowl, etc.)  I will try B100 one more time and see what happens.

    We are in the high 50's at night and mid 80's in daytime. I will let you know how it goes.

     

     

  • I talked to a diesel mechanic who works on lots of cummins and powerstroke and his opinion was water in the fuel.  His opinion was that if it was a mechanical problem your truck would of thrown a code.   Fuel with high water content will do exactly like you said happened to your cummins. 
  • If high water content in the fuel is the problem, what can be done.  My understanding is the fuel filter/water separator installed in the vehicle only separates water that is not emulsified in the biodiesel. (My "water in fuel" indicator does not illuminate.) Does the FASS or Air Dog system do a better job of water separation?

    Is this high water content an avoidable situation? Can the manufacture do something to eliminate or minimize the water? Does the water "settle out" over time or re-separate from the biodiesel? Can I test or observe water in the biodiesel?

  • One thing to remember is that bio diesel will clean your tank and lines of any debris.  Most people that run non-biodiesel in the first miles of a vehicles life accumulate debris and build up in the tank.  Biodiesel will clean this all out and when it loosens it will move through your fuel system.  As a fleet manager I continually had to remind people of this problem and to check the fuel filters and issues with injectors were common, especially on higher mile vehicles that have run non biodiesel previously.

  • It is most likely just excessive fuel in the cylinder, biodiesel does not ignite as quickly in some vehicles as regular diesel, causing the engine to load up a bit, try a tank of regular diesel and see if the problem goes away, the smoke shouldn't be a problem my 7.3 ford does the same thing when it is cold out first thing in the morning. I have not had any problems with it.
