Local supplier says a refinery in chile (99% sure that is what he said) is not producing now due to some failure. Apparently, it is a major source.

chistech:Just got a price on Monday here in MA for 54 gallon drum. $169.00. He did say it was going up in 10 days to $209.00 per barrel. He told me it is because they use methanol in windsheild washer fluid and demand normally goes up in winter. I also got a price from another vendor and he wanted $309.00 per barrel. I believe some vendors are scalping the public and are charging what they feel the market will handle.
Basic Capitalism is to charge what the market will bear. Don't complain about that unless you want another economic system other than Capitalism.
The reality is that commercial methanol is made from a petroleum resource +and+ that demand for methanol goes up in winter.
Our local supplier says the cause of this spike is a problem (shutdown) with a major plant in Chile. Apparently, that plant account for enough production to affect supply world wide.
I am quite aware of the politics of capitalism and I am not complaining. Charging a fair value for any item is what a fair market is about, hence "fair". But overcharging the public, even though in most cases it is legal, is still scalping. I believe when a person buys a ticket for it's true value then resells it for far and above what it is worth, even though some are willing to pay the elevated cost, it is still considered scalping!!
I thought this thread was about the price of methanol, not political science.
raften:Is natural gas considered a petroleum???
I don't know, but it is clearly a "fossil fuel".
Here is a list of planned and unplanned shut downs around the world. When its winter here its summer somewhere else.
