North Va home brew group wanted-

I'm in Quantico area- and am looking for some other home brewers to combine resources- and lower costs. I have enough wvo- my turkey fryer- and 5 years experiance running a Navy fuel lab- and am planning on making my first Bio diesel batch within the next couple of weeks. Methanol seems to be the hardest to find. Anyone interested- please contact me.

I'm interested.  I live in Woodbridge.  There is a source for Metahnol in Delaware.  I've been thinking of making a run to get some.  How much would you need?   If I fill a container could you get it in your container?  Can it be siphoned or pumped?  I've never handled it before.  Let's figure this out.

I'm beatnic at comcast  dot net if you want to go direct.

What I've heard about methanol is that it is pretty dangerous stuff.  Very flammable, and you do NOT want to breath the fumes.  You should handle it outdoors, and perhaps even use a breathing apparatus.  If you're indoors, then definitely use a breather.  It's ironic that biodiesel is rather benign, yet the chemicals that help make it (lye and methanol) are not.

I wouldn't suck on a siphon hose!  There are problems with plastic pump seal too or so I've heard.  I have 33 gal containers, but they would be too heavy to pour or even move without a lift.  Those 15 gal jobs might be about right for the first run.  I'm guestimateing I could manhandle one of them enough to pour the stuff or at least get it off my pickup and onto a hand truck.  It would be easier to build containment storage for the smaller containers.  15 gallons would last me a while.  That would be enough for 60 gals of BD?

I think the ratio is generally 9 parts vegetable oil to 1 part Methanol when homebrewing Biodiesel.

I have a basically infinite source of WVO (100%canola, titrates well, barely needs filtered/dewatered) and would be very very happy if someone wanted to trade for methanol.  I small-scale process, but have been out of methanol (thought I was getting a 55gal drum for Christmas, but Santa fell through) I've been meaning to run to DE, but wasn't sure if they still supply during the winter.  Anyone know?  I also heard that methanol could hit $8/gal this winter.

sorry it took so long to reply- I thought I would get an e-mail if I had any responses.

You can reach me at boattech1@verizon.net.

As far as transferring- best bet I would think of is a small drill pump - rubber impeller, low pressure and operated with a dc drill- should be able to prime a siphon tube with that- or just use that to pump it. What do you think ?

What's your set up for using it? Most processors I've read about acquire it in smaller jugs, mix in the lye and dispense from there into the processor. I don't think it's any more dangerous than gasoline. Appleseeds use a pump to mix it in,

Re: North Va home brew group wanted-

We have started brewing. My co-worker and I have made over 20 gallons so far. We bought methanol originaly for $8 a gallon- but found a place for 5.59 a gallon in VA. Our next run we are getting a 30 gallon drum. We are running the bio in a VW and a Dodge 2500. We leave some B100 out from our brewing to show what the worst case scenario is for B100 at the temps here- but even after the ice storm last night- we only had a small trace in our sample glass. With any regular diesel added - we wouldn't have even had that. Our waste oil is titrating with 1/2 ml to 1 m/l - and that is awesome- very low acidity in the waste oil. We are stepping up our production as some other people at the unit are showing interest and wanting to outright buy some bio from us.

I have a 97 Dodge 2500 and would like to contribute to the brew group.  I want to learn how to make bio and quit paying the $4.67 at the pumps.  I live in Stafford off 610 (near to Quantico) and am generally available for assisting on weekends.

I see this is an older post But how has you're brewing going? I'm down north of Kings Dominion have been studying WVO-BD for sometime now. Dominion Chemical in Richmond was selling methanol for $285 a drum three weeks ago don't know the price this week. Are you looking for additional help?

I am one of several from the Stafford/Fredericksburg area who have started a coop - Blueflash Biofuel with an industrial location in the Falmouth, VA area. We have several processors but we are currently working on a 100 gallon high volume unit. Most of our WVO comes from local collection but we are looking into bulk purchase - MT, rendering and several other options to increase production. Folks who are looking to join in, save money and abandon dino are welcome to contact me at bwmarshall@comcast.net or 571-344-0059. I am working on a website and hope to begin regular weekly "brew" nights by mid June.

Sorry it took time to get to me- the site just dumped 3 months of replies on me at 1 time ?!

boattech1@verizon.net- get a hold of me here to talk about bio- and we have made some improvements in our process since we began

That's three in this thread alone living in Warrenton.  I just finished my "appleseed" processor.  Also looking for methanol.  I saw a source in Richmond selling 55 gals for 215.  I don't want that much but would be willing to split the costs of purchasing some.

I'm working in my home and I do not want to store any large quantities of methanol for long periods.

email me at rjcoggin@yahoo.com if you want to work together on any of this.
