Biodiesel Plant explosion in NW Ohio

Let's hope that this kind of news doesn't start the "not in my back yard" thoughts when it comes to locating new plants?

DEFIANCE, Ohio (AP) -- Authorities in northwest Ohio say an explosion at a biodiesel plant Thursday injured four people. One of the injured had to be taken by a helicopter to a hospital.Authorities say the injured people had been in an office at the plant.Their identities were not immediately released, nor was their medical condition. Police in Defiance say the explosion happened about 3 p.m. at American AG Fuels. It's not clear what caused the blast.Authorities evacuated a two-block area next to the plant for about two hours until residents were allowed to return. The plant began processing soybean oil to make biodiesel within the last three years.

Human Error was to blame ...

Fire officials in Defiance, Ohio say human error caused that powerful explosion and fire Thursday at a bio-diesel processing plant.

Employees inadvertently left a manhole cover open on a storage tank holding glycerin, and a spark from an electric motor ignited the methanol vapors that escaped.

     Hi All,

Humans are apt to error once in a while, but that should not reflect on the industry as a whole. We take accidents for granted in our everyday life and I don"t think this should be singled out and have some government authority come in and mandate how someone should run his business. We have way to much of that now. Thanks Duff Streeter  www.michiganbiofuel.com
