Re: growing jatropha curcas, looking for more land

i have been a fan of biofuel for just a year or two now.  but not until recently since the gas prices have sky rocketed, have i been seriously doing some research.  first i began to look for a supply of biofuel and started contacting local resturants for there used oil.  and to my surprise most of them are under contract, most even have locks on there drums now.

i am currently looking to fit into a network of honest, stand up people where i can safely share some of my biofuel ideas and develop a team that use green energy eliminating the need for big company fuel sources.

i just started a real estate counseling company and im interested in converting all of my companies, families and friends vehicles to desiel.  so, i will need a supply of biofuel.  can you help???

Why look to buy land to grow? You can lease land very cheap anywhere you what to. South Texas you can get 100 acres for about 15k. you can lease it for $20 per acre yearly. 5 yrs or longer is going to be cheap when no one is farming on most of the land in the south. Labor is cheap too. I would be welling to help someone get land leases.

Re: growing jatropha curcas, looking for more land

    hi Texasrich,

I've checked with the state of Texas, Nueces county (where I live) and neither had land for lease. I've since contacted the State again and asked them to look into San Patricio, Jim Wells, Kenedy, Bee, Lavaca, Aransas and a few other counties that are relatively close to me (say within 50 miles, give or take a few). no land for lease by the state of texas. i havent contacted those counties one by one, but i have spoken to those in San Patricio, not much love there either.

if you know of anything say within 20 miles of zip 78410, i'd be interested in 20 year lease's. 5 years is just when the plant is at full production. i'd hate to get them to perfect production then have someone say, oh, your lease expired, we'll be taking it over now.

i'd have to dig up 1200 trees per acre of leased land and hope they survive a move to somewhere else.

Re: growing jatropha curcas, looking for more land

its very possible bluebeacon, i just ordered another 1000 seeds last night, i've a small lot of saplings growing now and a few hundred seeds on hand still. what part of texas are you in? i just completed my application for the Texas Veterans Land Board for 25 acres in Banquete, just a few miles from my own house. (and from what the realtor says (remember its a realtor), the TVLB is very lenient on the requirements to make the loan, they finance 95% of it so I only have to come up with under 3 grand, then another 5 grand to dig a well. though I'll be planting before the well is dug. I feel i need to get these saplings in the ground and get more started to get rolling along as soon as i can.

    email me:

    clcheek@yahoo.com

and we can discuss when the first harvest and yadda yadda.

oh, you do know you dont have to process jatropha oil right? filter it (preferably during the seed press) and into the tank it goes (for older model diesels).

Sorry it took so long to reply out of town. I will look into your zip code. Try private lease not state owned. I will get back to you soon. Email me or I can just post info.

Re: growing jatropha curcas, looking for more land

my email address is in a post just above this. update on the land search, i found 25 acres for sale @ $50,000. thats 2k per acre. i've found nothing that cheap in this area in the past 6 months. i'd love to have 25 acres, though Im trying to think of the feasibility of just me farming it. hired help is a given at this point should I get it. I've applied through the TVLB (Texas Veteran's Land Board) they finance 95%. my closing costs are still around $7K if I remember correctly. (have been a little sick the past few days).

25 acres. thats a LOT of trees, at 1200 per acre. 30,000 trees, have to keep them all pruned at 6 or 7 foot tall. plant them all in planters, let them get knee high and transplant them. would probably be best to trade in my SUV for a truck (diesel?) and buy a tank for water, (no well on the land at this point).

I've looked around for other land to buy (closer to my home), cheaper, or lease options. the only thing about leasing is it take the tree 5 years to reach maximum production. I do NOT like the idea of starting 5 acres somewhere, then just as it gets good, the owner finds another use for the land and tries to tie things up legally to keep the trees. so im souring on the idea of a lease. I've contacted a few people about some kind of profit sharing thing right off the bat, sparked a little interest but no one has checked back after initial contact, or responded to emails or calls.

so i may just have to go ahead with the 25 acres. there are only a few more forms i have to sign to complete the application. put down a $500 good faith deposit (fully refundable for any reason, like if the loan isnt approved. or it is but i've changed my mind). 25 acres, i think that would probably be the biggest jatropha farm around here, possibly in Texas.

so i have about 100 saplings coming up, 200 more seeds on hand and 1000 enroute from ebay. 28,700 to go LOL.

Re: growing jatropha curcas, looking for more land

    Ted,

We have an established jatropha plantation in Thailand now.

I am looking to expand into North America. We researched South Texas, but i can explain why that is NOT the place to grow Jatropha. I am also establishing a small plantation in South Florida only as a research and nursery facility. Our plantation in Thailand is in full production and even haa a 30 minute film on our efforts . I have spoken at conferences world wide and all I can say is beware before you leap. It is very hard work, not easy, but, yes it can work and may be profitable. I will like to talk and check out what you have.

Re: growing jatropha curcas, looking for more land

    Richard,

South Texas is doing just fine with Jatropha. My trees are growing and thriving. We have less chance of frost or freezing temps than Florida too. But feel free to dismiss Texas all you like, we have much more land than Florida, we have hundreds of refineries (counting all types, not just petro) and more are being built every month. We have fewer hurricanes than Florida as well. The State of Texas also pays an additional 20 cents per gallon of biodiesel produced, whether you use it in your own engine, or sell it at retail.

    http://www.tropilab.com/jatropha-cur.html

very overpriced, they are half or 25% of tropilab's prices on ebay.

LakeBiofuels sells 1000 for 62 bucks, and 50,000 seeds for 1100, 1/4th the price of tropilab on the 50000, 1/2 price of tropilab on the 1000 seeds.

    ask for Cary at lakebiofuels.com

i've had 80% germination rates with seeds from them.
