    HELP! Dead Algae Tetraselmis

I am trying to grow Tetraselmis and it died. I guess my mother is right,,I dont have a green thumb.

Tap water was used , 24ppt of table salt, one gallon jar, Jar left outside in Florida sun, home made CO2 generator used (Baking soda + Vinegar).

The algae in my swiming pool grows faster than my culture. Please advice.

tap water has chlorine you need distilled water, table salt is not suitable you need aquarium salts that reproduce seawater,, putting a culture out in the direct sun at an early stage will kill the algae.. you need to start the culture indoors under flourescent light in stages.

we posted  instructions as to how to expand  algae cultures somewhere in this forum.  try again..

Water cost money, the cheap stuff (tap) has chlorine among other things in it. You want real water, not the stuff they sell in the stores as pure water. You want water you would not give a child.

I have a rain water tank catching the rain off my shed roof. I am using this to start my cultures and it is so far working quite nicely. I am pretty time poor at present so my cultures are pretty much neglected for a couple days at a time but are still growing.

For salt I am using swimming pool salt which is virtually raw salt, scrapped off the salt evaporative pond and bagged.

I have been curious too about what kind of water to use. I haven't started a culture yet, but have a setup i'm getting together.  I have some fish at work in tap water, though I use a de-chlorinating solution i drop in (20 or so drops for about a half gallon).... either way, would this be anything i could use in this case, or is it still not enough/still other harmful things present?

     Tee,

When I used de-chlorinating solution, it seemed to work - the algae grew.
