I want to use drum filters to screen my oil as it goes into my collection drum.  I have seen drum filters advertised from 100-600 microns and would like to know which size is best for filtering out the gunk in the WVO.  Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks,

This depends on whether or not you're filtering fatty oils and the temperature you're filtering at. Our 200 micron barrel filter clog with fat quickly and will not pass oil, henceforce.

A 400 micron filter will be very good for any processor. Anything that gets thru that will be in the glycerin layer after the process.

We use a window screen for drum one. Heat it to 150F and let settle over night. Drain any water/crud off the bottom. Then via stand pipe it is pumped into drum 2 thru the 400 micron filter. Then via stand pipe in drum 2 to the processor.

The best setups I've seen or know about use a cascading filter set up with 3-4 filters in series removing progressively smaller junk.

That seems to offer the most flexibility as to what oil sources you can use and it also looks to optimize ease of maintenance of your collection setup.

I agree that what specifics are best depends on your oil source(s).

Just don't overkill the filtration before processing. Like I mentioned before the glycerin settling wil take all of the particles with it.

If you are hyper about filtration do it after the process. Overkill is common here too. You don't have to be paranoid about it unless you ar using magnasol for dry washing. your vehicle filter will do just fine. We go with a 10 micron at our filling pump, just like the petro stations.
