A discussion of marine applications has started under the BDN membership strand but I think it deserves it's own.
I have been actively promoting the marine application of biodiesel since I started at Self-Reliance a couple months ago. I have just submited an article for publication in "On the Water" magazine, which I'm pretty sure will be published in their September issue. I'll be looking for other publishing opportunites as well, so if anyone has any suggestions or leads that would be great.
Right now I'm in the process of putting together a mailing list of marinas on Cape Cod, and I will be sending them all some info about biodiesel soon. I'll be following up with phone calls to try to get them to offer it either from a pump or in containers of B100, and then coordinating their efforts to get it.
We are also working on getting operations like whale watch boats, the island ferries, and charter boats to use B20. We have a couple of interested parties already and I'll be doing more toward that end when I'm done with the marinas.
I have gathered quite a bit of information about biodiesel marine use and would be happy to answer questions about it and refer you to documents or people using it.

just to set the record straight, the stuff you learn in grade school, the popular mythos regarding columbus, is BS. truth is columbus knew where he was going, knew where he was when he got there, and the very first thing he did when he got there was set up a thriving slave trade on the island of haiti. his crew forced the haitians to carry them around the island and supply them with gold (which wasn't actually all that available there, but they thought it was) in addition to selling all their families overseas. columbus was a murderer, rapist, plunderer, slave trader, and just about everything else. he died a very rich man as a result of his exploits.
columbus day should not be celebrated by anyone but bin laden. Sadly, textbooks still teach this "columbus as hero" nonsense for the same reason they teach us that the revolutionary war had to do with taxes, that we actually cared about the holocaust in WWII, or that the civil war had anything to do with slavery - they make for good bland stories that are supposed to inspire patriotism. textbook manufacturers must cater to their large markets, and the large markets are places like california, texas, etc which keep a tight leash on what their students learn to avoid controversy.
i suggest you read the truths behind history, especially the stuff you learn in school. you'd be amazed how angry it will make you, and how many lies you've been force fed all your life. history shows where we've been. it's vital, it's interesting, and it's been dumbed down and made bland in our schools. how many students do you know that like history? there's a reason for that and it isn't the actual subject's fault.

I am purcharing a 40 ft Sea Ray express boat, 1994 w/1997 315 hp diesel engines. My son and I have started making biodiesel with a 60 gal kit we purchased. Do you have any suggestions?

If you have two separate fuel tanks I would keep one with petroleum diesel and use separate fuel filters so you can switch 'just in case.' I'd also be sure you filter and de-water your fuel prior to pumping to the boat. If you are relatively handy, be sure to have additional filters available for both your water separation filter and fuel filter. (do you have a two filter system?) Another thing to be careful with is with biodiesel storage -- water like to find it way into biodiesel and algae can be even more of a problem for fuel stored in the boat. Treat with an algacide and try to prevent long periods of biodiesel storage on the boat. Keep us posted on how it goes.
