It might not be economical to make biodiesel out of them, but would it work to burn the larvae (either dried or fresh and squirmy?) in your home furnace like people burn corn?

Hmm I wonder what that would smell like... gross but I suppose they would burn. But then if you're doing that it would make more sense to burn the waste that they were eating in the first place, less efficiency loss there actually. The key is drying it and burning it cleanly. Biomass is biomass!

burning protien is wasteful (fixed nitrogen, livestock feed) and smelly and an NOx problem. The bound Nitrogen in coal is the principal source of NOx. I assume the same would be true for biomass.

Why not just burn the biomass? Good idea. As for nigh NOx, why not run the exhaust from the furnace through an air pump and bubble it through your backyard algae pond (see Ecogenics to buy a kit) and continue to re-cycle the gas over and over through the algae until the NOx and CO2 were reduced to a fraction of their former selves? Surely the cost of running an air compressor to do this wouldn't be that must of an expense? Then you harvest your own biomass to re-burn later. I don't understand why GreenFuel Technologies doesn't re-cycle the flue gas in its photobioreactors in this way. Of course, I don't understand a lot, as evidenced by my questions here.

Hi all. I found your forum while researching Black Soldier Flies. I've been working with them for a little over a year and I thought some of you might be interested in my experiences. To be honest I'm setting myself up to be a reseller of a unit designed to use BSF to process household waste. I doubt I'll earn a living doing this and it's something I would do regardless of any profit. If anyone has spefic questions about BSF I'll be happy to give the best answer I can. I have a lengthy thread describing my discovery and experiences with the flies/maggots and I can post a link if it's not against forum rules.

I learned of Black Soldier Fly from GW's posts on www.PondBoss.com forum. Have started a blog at www.bsflcomposting.com ...Forum won't let me post a link yet.

GW's forum thread link is posted on my blog.  BSFL is fascinating. I received some today from PhoenixWorm.com and they went right to work eating my scrap pile.

Am going to use the BSFL in reducing sewer plant classified organic solids. Will leave the biodiesel to you folks!

I want to be sensitive to your forum, especially because I've decided to become a BioPod dealer, so please let me know if my presence here starts to seem too spammy. I began my experiments with BSF before any commercial unit was available, and I would be doing the same thing even if these products weren't being developed.

Hi all. So is biodiesel from this source a no go due to the high FFA levels? Or are there cost effective and safe ways around making diesel from high FFA oils/fats?
