Re: Biodiesel home brewing in the Houston area

    CLEAN:

Was a co-op ever formed in the Houston region? I work at a non-profit environmental group in town and have been contacted numerous times by establishments who have waste vegetable oil for sale or donation and while I've been able to connect them with individual home brewers, I'd like to begin formulating a more formal network. I'd appreciate knowing if something like this is already in place and if not, whether others would be interested in helping formulate a co-op or a loose network of restaurants and home brewers. Thanks.

    Charles,

I'm looking for a WVO source, single or multiple locations for modest Metro Houston BD operation with growth potential, thanks.

     Hello Tony,

I live in the Spring/Woodlands area and have wondered if a co-op  could be viable, however yours is the only request I've seen for our area.

Home brewing is alot of fun and educational.  However it's not for everyone.  If you live in the Houston area and want a quick fill-up with 100% biodiesel fuel (B100) the drive over to New Energy Fuels (http://www.newenergyfuels.com).

I live in SW Houston (Meyerlan) but I'll probably be moving to the inner loop in the fall, looking to start or join a co op.

I am looking for a WVO supply.  I am on the west side of houston.  I only need about 10-15 gallons per week, and this has made if very difficult to set up my own restaurant collection.  Any and all information appreciated.

I'm on the North Side of Houston. Would be interested in the idea of a co-op or leanrning more about it.  Not making biodiesel yet, but just got a 2006 E320 CDI and was also wondering if anyone has had any experience with running bio in it.  melinski@earthlink.net

    Thanks.

Re: Biodiesel home brewing in the Houston area

I joined this site several years ago and faded out.  At the time, diesel was cheaper than I could make it so I just built the Appleseed stills for people that wanted to make their own BD.  Since then I guess my username was deleted, so I rejoined and am here to get cooking again.  Now with the price of fuel, I have decided to get back into the homebrew.  Back in the day, one of my problems was finding used oil... most were under contracts.

Anyway, I would like to get into a forum that has a good local source of members.  I see there is little postings here, anyone wish to change that?

    Tomball, Spring, Woodlands.....

We're in the process of looking at a BioPro 190.   We are evaluating taking on a few additional partners.   I'll keep the group updated via this thread.

I have been looking at making biodiesel for over a year now.  But i have been reluctant to launch because of the unknown of WVO.  Would a Co-op help in this regard? What else would a Co-op accomplish?  What is the current price of WVO and are there reliable sources?

Re: Biodiesel home brewing in the Houston area

When you say "the unknown of the WVO", do you mean the uncertaintanty of where to find it? Or something else.    For the amounts that a single person would consume in a home brew setup, there is still a lot of WVO to be had.  That's one of the nice things about Houston and the surrounding areas.  We have more restaurants per capita than anywhere in the nation.  And they all fry something.    For a group, such as ourselves, we wanted to ensure that we had a reliable source.  We had no problem.  Not really sure what a co-op would  bring to the table, except to perhaps line up larger sources of WVO with contracts.   The other obvious reason for a co-op is to share in the cost of the processor and the ability to buy the consumables (methanol, catalyst, etc) in bulk, thus getting a little better price.

I have no idea what some are paying for WVO.  We found more than enough sources for our group free of charge.

I thought this article in the Houston Chronicle was slightly funny and some sensationalized.

I'm just getting into this and I'm wanting to learn.  I would also be willing to get into co-op. I live in the La Porte area.  I have a 2006 Ford F-250 4X4.  I was reading that the warranty would only allow B5.  Is there any danger with using say B20, B99, or B100?  If anyone can give me some insight I would appreciate it.

    SD,

Thanks for the note.  I would be interested in joining a co-op and help drive out costs, share ideas etc...   I have a manufacturing plant in Tomball and have been considering for some time to put in a small biodiesel plant for my own purposes.  What is the best way to get involved with you leaders of the industry?

    Thanks
