That is funny. I have had something like that happen but with a smaller pump. Not near as exciting however I have a trash pump that will be on line soon and will remember your post.
Did I mention how awkward it is with the neighbors when you drop a full pail of WVO in the street while unloading the truck.

Oil Dry at NAPA is magic on spills.
Don't ask me how many bags we used on a 250 gallon WVO tote spill.
(it was about 9)
Swept up real nice and clean!!! :)

My biodiesel partner in crime Jerry, thought it was hilarious! Now that we got most of the oil off the truck I'm starting to think its damn funny myself!

What kind of trash pump were you using?
Sounds like one heck of a sucker...

It's a 5.5 horsepower Honda 2" Model. I think it's rated at about 13,000 gallons per hour. After the above mentioned 'wild snake' incident, we were able to fill a 55 gallon barrel to the brim in 30-40 seconds with WVO. As Larry would put it, Git R Done!

I buy the walmart brand at like $2.00 per 50lb bag. Comes in a red bag with a cat on the front???[:D][:D]
That does sound like a stick mess you got yourself into. I am glad to hear that a trash pump will work for WVO. I have a friend that heats with waste motor oil. He rented a trash pump to collect oil and claimed that the pump would not pump the oil!! Maybe he had a bad pump.... I have a trash pump at home, maybe I will heve to give it a try. Although I really like my vacuum system!!

I think I need to invest in some of that kitty litter. I still can't get the oil out of the grooves in my plastic bedliner.

Re: Trash Pump Do's and Don'ts....Mostly Don'ts
I have a 3" 8hp honda pump that I felt was too powerful for collection. I just purchased a 1" Robin mini 4 stroke pump that works beautifully. It is plumbed into a tote for collection, so the above will hopefully never occur. The best part is the fuel consumption. Ive run it for hours on its tiny tankful. 1 gallon of gasoline should be good for a couple years of my use.

Re: Trash Pump Do's and Don'ts....Mostly Don'ts
So a friend gave me a 3.5 hp gas powered pump, the kind with the thermoplastic housing. As soon as I get a new impeller, he sucked up a rock, I want to try collecting with it. What I am wondering is if I put a valve on my pick up, will that be harmfull to the pump if operating and the valve is closed while I get set up?

Re: Trash Pump Do's and Don'ts....Mostly Don'ts
Ya,
Trash pumps are great for biodiesel. These are most of the diaphragm positive displacement type variety. They'll pump just about anything that will flow. They don't particularly care about the quality of the fluid or whether or not there are solids mixed in with it.

raften, that should be fine, it can run all day without sucking stuff up because it's air cooled.

Re: Trash Pump Do's and Don'ts....Mostly Don'ts
This pump has an impeller instead of a diaphram so I am not sure if it is really classified as a trash pump. I can understand a diaphram running ok without flow but wonder about a impeller.

Sorry I missed that, perhaps email or call the manufacturer and see. I tried finding out but can't find anything that says one way or another.
