Nothing worth doing comes easy in this World!!!There must be a system to regulate the quaity of biodiesel;be it BQ9000 or ASTM 6751.Without quality control and certification biodiesel could get a bad reputation.If you want to sell Biofuel you must be regulated...if the biodiesel industry does not have to follow environmental and quality control standards why must the Big Oil and Chemical companys have to???? To make money selling biofuel takes investment and time.I just attended the NBB conference in SanFransico and Piedmount was there a very cool Company!!! and a good example of what Iam talking about.

Since the creation of the The Mcgyan Process, the process now used now will be antiquated, and much too costly to compete.

I'm sure they will license the process for a nice fee.

There is no one answer to our energy problem/need... which is expect to increase by 50% in the next 2 decades.

It is a matter of attitude and habit shift that needs to take place in each of as a people at a grass root level.

The idea that anyone can actually do this is amazing and it show a simplistic answer to what seems now to be one of our biggest challenges. Of course, this needs to be done in safe and legal manner for the good of all.

So more power to everyone and more power to small and large companies that want and have something to contribute to make our life a more peacful and less stressful. Alex Q. from EcoGreenSites.com

I have strong background in Russian an then UK Oil industry, so "Going Legal is a nightmare" not exactly compare to UK and Russia. My friend from UK made real money to be basically monopolist to collect glycerin from biodiesel plants in Ukraine. Besides of legal obstacles what else is hidden surprises an practicals level?

My canned answer is also "it aint worth it" but since you are either part of the problem or part of the solution. I am choosing to be part of the solution.

I don't even make the biodiesel. I buy it from a plant. I mark it up and sell it to the final customer. Even doing this has put me into a nightmare of red tape. I can't get an answer from the state on how this product is to be taxed. For the time being I am simply collecting non discounted sales tax. Ironically if I sell B-20 there is a 20% discount on sales tax. B-100 I pay full boat, go figure.

I also had to buy a 3000 gallon truck (which you can only transport 2500 gallons in). I picked up a small flatbed to transport totes. The big truck requires a CDL with tank endorsement, Insurance heavy truck inspection and a highway use tax account. I also had to register with the US DOT and put the number on the door.

My customers are mostly farmers, landscapers and tree surgeons. I can only sell off road fuel, as collecting highway taxes is another huge ball of red tape.

Right now I am having trouble keeping up with the demand. I am in a state that taxes diesel fuel heavily (we are paying $4.79 at the pump this week) So my fuel is a good way to stretch fuel budgets. New york requires most customers to pay their highway taxes on the fuel up front and then apply for a refund at the end of the year. Most taxpayers either don't know that or don't bother with the paperwork so the state makes out like a bandit on overpaid taxes.

The plant that I buy from uses chicken tallow as feed stock, my preliminary testing of blends in my freezer is not promising, so I may out of business come cold weather, at least until spring. I cannot even sell any preblended fuel because selling petroleum in this state requires even more red tape, bonds and licenses.

how do i give you a ring? I'm interested in doing the same thing as you are which is selling the supplies. I'd like to be a distributor for you in my country since the pp there only know how to grow the feedstock but don't know much about the technology. I got a few interested buyers but i don't have the resources yet. I just began to dig into this.

Great post Graydon. Sounds sensible ... I'll be interested how this works out. I'm imagining getting a call and showing them my log of miles driven and fuel produced but wondering if that's enough to keep the fines from coming? Might be good enough after you've paid the first year in good faith. (BTW ... I'm currently running only commercial biodiesel and the whole 'tax angle' has me spooked away from going through the trouble just to save a couple bucks. Sad huh?)

About Nebraska Road Tax self production/consumption.

It was painless here in Nebraska. I would have to think that by now most states are set for collecting tax from individuals.

When we first got started and contacted the State, they had no way to collect road tax from an individual. It took them only three days to get it set up and they were ready!

The process is simple here, every three months they send me an email reminder, I go on line and enter my issued ID number, then enter how many gallons I made in the past three months, I then print out the confirmation which computes the amount owed and mail that in with a check.

There is a catch! You must file even if you report zero gallons made AND if you do not file, there is a $50.00 per DAY fine!

In Nebraska tax is due when the fuel is made, even for off road use, then you have to file for a refund for any amount used off road.

So now when I complain about our roads I do not fell guilty!
