Crude Glycerin Disposal

Hello. I work with a nonprofit in New Orleans producing biodiesel. We are in the process of upgrading and expanding our facility, which will allow us to increase our production. When finished we will be producing 400-500 gallons of glycerin per week. We are looking at different ways of disposing this substance, and we have heard that some facilities such as brick manufacturers use glycerin as a combustion fuel. Has anyone heard of this before or have experience in this field? Also, if anyone has ideas on other ways to safely dispose of glycerin please let us know as we are open to all ideas.

I bought a Biopro 380 from Bob at the Biofuel clinic in May of 2008. Due to a death in the family I didn't even start planning to set it up until the winter of 08. Once I started to a neighbor caught wind of what I was doing and called the town to report "suscpicious activity". The town came down to investigate and I told them exactly what I was doing and why and how I was doing it. They told me I had to file for permits, etc,etc,etc. Meanwhile these are the same people who are screaming for alternative fuel sources and they just approved a 100 acre wind farm off the coast of the cape; go figure. Anyway, I have spent a lot of money fighting them thru appeals and do the future costs involved to fight them I have finally given up.

This Biopro has NEVER been used, not once. It's not even wired yet and all of contents (hoses, valves, manual, etc) are still in the box. The only thing it needs is a dusting off and a new home. It has been stored in a heated garage since I unloaded it off the truck almost two years ago.

I paid $13,480 in 2008. I am asking $11,000 two years later. Also, I will pay for shipping anywhere in the Country.

I will get my camera at home and take some better pictures soon these are from my cell phone.

Titrating Oil - Building A Titration Kit (04:11)
In this video we show how to build a basic titration kit that will be used to titrate oil with. Titration is nothing nore than a method used to find out what the acid level is in the oil that will be used to produce Biodiesel. It's necessary to know this because it will indicate how much catalyst will be used to make biodiesel.

Titrating Oil - Preparing Titration Solution (04:31)
This video shows how to prepare the titration solution that will be used to do the actual titration with. It's important that this be done accurately because it will impact the titration readings. To make it, add 1 gram of catalyst (either Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) or Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) to 1 liter of water.

This is where it all comes together. We do 3 complete titrations from start to finish. We measure everything out, explain how to mix everything, do the actual titrations, and then explain what the results mean.

The Basic Titration Method
1- Add 1 mL of Oil to 10 mL of Isopropyl Alcohol
2- Add a couple drops of indicator solution (Phenolphthalein is what we used)
3- Start adding measured amounts of Titration Solution
4- Watch for the color change to stay for 30 seconds
5- Record how much titration solution was used
Titration Solution Used = Number Of Grams Of Catalyst To Use Per Liter Of Oil
If there were 4mL used, then 7.5 + 4 = 11.5 grams X 100 liters of oil = 1150 grams of KOH

Making A Large Batch - Shop Intro & Filtering Oil (08:30)

Loading Oil, Catalyst, & Methanol (05:35)
Using a BioPro 380, we introduce how easy Biodiesel can be made. We show how to load the machine with oil using an inexpensive sump pump, how to add the methanol, how to measure out the catalyst & get ready to start the batch. There are several different styles and kinds of Biodiesel production equipment available on the market, this one just happens to be our personal favorite.

Making A Large Batch - Starting The Batch (02:24)
Using the same BioPro 380, we show how to start the machine and get a batch running. This one's pretty small because it really doesn't take much to get it going. Reach around back, turn the machine on, and push the start button. We then load it with sulfuric acid (to give us higher yields) and then we let the machine take care of the rest.

Making A Large Batch - Transferring Finished Fuel (06:19)

Sometimes folks ask a simple question: "What is biodiesel?". Here's a short explanation:

Biodiesel is a vegetable oil-based fuel that runs in unmodified diesel engines - cars, buses, trucks, construction equipment, boats, generators, and oil home heating units. Biodiesel is usually made from soy or canola oil, and can also be made from recycled fryer oil (yes, from McDonalds or your local Chinese restaurant) or any other vegetable oil or animal tallow.

You can blend biodiesel with regular diesel or run 100% biodiesel. You can blend your percentages of biodiesel-to-diesel fuel at any ratio, at any time. This means you can be running b100 (100% biodiesel), get down to a quarter tank and add regular petroluem diesel and essentially be running b25 (25% biodiesel), then get down to near empty and add straight petroleum, straight biodiesel, or any percentage in between.

What are the benefits?
1) National security. Since biodiesel is made domestically, biodiesel reduces our dependence on foreign oil. That's good.

2) National economy. Using biodiesel keeps our fuel buying dollars at home instead of sending it to foreign countries. This reduces our trade deficit and creates jobs.

3) It's sustainable & non-toxic. Face it, we're going to run out of oil eventually. Biodiesel is 100% renewable... we'll never run out of biodiesel. And if biodiesel gets into your water supply, there's no problem - it's just modified veggie oil! Heck, you can drink biodiesel if you so desire, but it tastes nasty (trust us).

4) Emissions. Biodiesel is nearly carbon-neutral, meaning it contributes almost zero emissions to global warming! Biodiesel also dramatically reduces other emissions fairly dramatically. We like clean air, how about you? Plus, the exhaust smells like popcorn or french fries!

5) Engine life. Studies have shown biodiesel reduces engine wear by as much as one half, primarily because biodiesel provides excellent lubricity. Even a 2% biodiesel/98% diesel blend will help.

6) Drivability. We have yet to meet anyone who doesn't notice an immediate smoothing of the engine with biodiesel. Biodiesel just runs quieter, and produces less smoke.

Are there any negatives?
Of course. There is no perfect fuel.
1) Primarily that biodiesel is not readily available in much of the nation, YET (click here for a map of locations), although availability has jumped considerably in the last five years. Commercial consumption of biodiesel jumped from 500,000 gallons in 2000 to 15 million gallons in 2001 to 75 million gallons in 2006. And there's no measure how much home-produced biodiesel there is.

2) Biodiesel will clean your injectors and fuel lines. If you have an old diesel vehicle, there's a chance that your first few tanks of biodiesel could free up all the accumulated crud and clog your fuel filter. But this is a GOOD thing... think of it as kicking up dust around the house when you clean.

3) Biodiesel has a higher gel point. B100 (100% biodiesel) gets slushy a little under 32°F. But B20 (20% biodiesel, 80% regular diesel - more commonly available than B100) has a gel point of -15°F. Like regular diesel, the gel point can be lowered further with additives such as kerosene (blended into winter diesel in cold-weather areas).

4) Old vehicles (older than mid-90s) might require upgrades of fuel lines (a cheap, easy upgrade), as biodiesel can eat through certain types of rubber. Almost all new vehicles should have no problem with biodiesel.

5) Finally, the one emission that goes up with biodiesel is NOx. NOx contributes to smog. We feel that a slight increase (up to 15%) in NOx is greatly offset by the reduction in all other emissions and the major reduction in greenhouse gasses.

First a little information on the shrub, from Wikipedia:

Jatropha curcas, Barbados nut or Physic nut is a perennial poisonous shrub (normally up to 5 m high) belonging to the Euphorbiaceae or spurge family. It is an uncultivated non-food wild-species.

The plant, originating in Central America, whereas it has been spread to other tropical and subtropical countries as well and is mainly grown in Asia and in Africa, where it is known as Pourghère. It is used as a living fence to protect gardens and fields from animals. ^[4]

It is resistant to a high degree of aridity (it can be planted even in the desert and as such does not compete with food crops.

The seeds contain 30% oil that can be processed to produce a high-quality biodiesel fuel, usable in a standard diesel engine.

Some reports have the seeds containing as much as 47% oil.

Beginning with germination, it is noted on [[biodiesel_production:biodiesel.blogdrive.com|biodiesel.blogdrive.com]], biodiesel.blogdrive.com, that sucessfull germination rates upwards of 95% have been enjoyed in South Texas. The use of fertilizer while attempting germination hinders, rather than aides the seeds to sprout. Fertilization after the fact will increase the plant's growth and general health.
