I've been talking at a couple of people tonight about having a get-together after the first day of my Advanced Topics homebrew class in Saginaw- go do a restaurant outing after the class is over for the day (which ends at 5 pm at SVSU) This kind of thing has been a lot of fun during past classes and sometimes people from outside the class who want to network with others in their area come.
The class itself is Aug 18-19 and a few people will be in town for the preceding beginner class Aug 16-17, so I suppose we have a few other dates if Saturday isn't good for people. It's kind of a fun atmosphere when folks are around for four days of biodiesel 'boot camp' so a gettogether earlier than Sat might be fun too/instead of.
Anyone interested? Which day would be best for you- Friday or Saturday evening? Anyone know what the restaurant scene is like there- I remember the 'standard' mall places (ie TGIF's types of places), that might be the best bet in trying to get a large group seated. Then again if we go early enough- 5:30 dinner- it might not be difficult to find seating. Do'nt know what to expect there.

By the way I promise to be more coherent in person than this post indicates. It's 4 am during trip preparations for me. Grammar/English has suffered...
biodiesel dinner party = eating fried food then brewing up the WVO? If it isnt...it should be.

I would be interested in attending the dinner, sounds like fun. Don't know any particular places, TGIF for example sound fine.
I'm flexible, either Friday evening or Saturday evening.
I'll be attending the 'Advanced Class', might even sign up for the Beginner Class (if I have the time).

I could host to grille some burgers or something at my house, too - if that makes sense or simplifies anything. I'm about 15 minutes from SVSU out in the country just east of Saginaw.

It'd be great to do something at Eric's (do you have a processor at the new place, by the way?)- the problem is we won't know how many people to expect. That might be a problem for a restaurant, too, though.
A get-together in someone's back yard rather than in a loud restaurant sounds a bit better, but a restaurant might be easier for the logistics (like not knowing how many to expect and not knowing how much food/beer (?) to get, not having to clean up afterwards, etc). If we get together in your backyard, what are the mosquitoes like at that time of year- do you still have them? We'd still be hanging out at dusk most likely.
I'm game
I've got the same cousin of apple seed processor that I've had for a couple years. The day job has been all-consuming, so now it's little more than an ornament in the corner of the garage. It's still full of my last disaster of a batch.
Mosquitos have been mild this year - very dry. Saginaw county sprays for them, so even under normal conditions they aren't terrible.
I'm three miles from a large chain grocer, so running out of food isn't a big worry. I've been doing refrigeration for half a dozen party stores, so beer and ice is less of a problem. One of them is across the street from the grocery.
Clean dry feedstock is a bigger problem for me than the processor. I've got methanol, and lye, though the lye may have hydrated.
I won't oversell it - I bought it cheap, and it's a bit of a redneck heaven, but that often leads to more fun....
Hey Mark;
I'm new to this forum, but am trying to make those dates available for meeting up, since it would be great to meet some other Michigan BD people at the Saginaw gathering. Also interested in the Michigan Biodiesel group on yahoo if you decide to go ahead with that Hopefully I will see the posts for the particulars on the Michigan gathering. Wanted to get into you BD class, but don't know for certain if I can get away then.
Thanks for doing all that you do for the BD community!

Hello,
I'm interested in a get together too. I'll be coming in from Cincinnati for both the beginner's and advanced classes. Any suggestions for affordable lodging in town close to the workshop??? -Martin
Here's what I've rounded up so far.
Thursday some of my friends get together for cocktails after work at TGI Fridays - so there's a larger group available to join up with if we wish. Most are non-biodiesel types; Radio sales.
Friday I should be able to host a hamburger grilling session, if there is interest. I'd like to get a better feel for numbers of people, though, so I can determine types and quantities of beverages and food.
Since the only justification for living in a great lakes state is the three months of summer boating, that looks like an option for Saturday. Long range forcasts are what they are, but it looks about perfect....

Ok, let's do a barbeque at Eric's on Friday - only problem is that we have no way of doing a head count.
Do you want to post your address temporarily, or otherwise have people contact you, or something along those lines?
The other suggestion I have is that if you guys want to get together with us class participants for dinner after class on a different day, just come to the class after it ends:
Thursday and Friday it ends at 4, and on Friday we're heading to Eric's for a barbeque
Saturday class ends at 5
Sunday I think everyone will be driving home, so I don't think there'll be a dinner outing then.
Here's the class address if you want to meet up with us on Thursday to go to dinner at some restaurant, or Saturday at 5 for the same (or some other activity as suggested by Eric)- come right after class (note: if you're trying to come to attend the class, please sign up at www.girlmark.com/tour first) :

For whatever reason, people always miss the turn from Veterans Parkway to Wadsworth road. It's right at the bottom of the overpass immediately after you cross I-675. There's a dentist's office at the corner. The neighborhood looks nasty, but it's only for a mile. It turns to wide-open country out by my house.
If you get screwed up, my cell phone number is {Deleted to protect the innocent}.
I'll provide a hot surface for grilling and refrigeration for the libations....
Hey One 4 Gaia,
Were you successful in setting up a class with Girlmark here in A2?
I have a few biodiesel contacts in the area and could probably be a contribution to this.
Let me know,
