  • After over 10 years of car-less bliss in NYC its time to break down and get a car to commute to the Bronx and NJ plus take the family out of town.  We are committed to B100 used and have a local source of high quality ASTM fuel.  We are thinking to get a Jetta or a Passat between the years of 2005 and 2008.  Any insights or experience?

  • ac, perhaps a little more research before you posted this poll would have helped you out. There are no 2007 or 2008 VW diesels in the US. As for the older ones, the Passat and Jetta have very similar engines. There should be no difference running B100 in one or the other. It depends on what size car you want. Also, the early 2000s diesel Passats came only with an automatic transmission, so if you want a stick, you will have to buy a Jetta. The last Passat diesels were 2005. The last Jetta diesels were 2006 (new body, old engine). the 2009 & 10 Jetta diesels cannot run on biodiesel (see: savebiodiesel.com/detail.html &  www.biodieselsmarter.com/.../the_saga_of_the_09_tdi_and_its.php for details). Anyway, the point is, of all the cars you have listed above, only one, the 2006 Jetta actually exists. My advice would be, if you have a family, which it sounds like you do, buy a 2005 Passat Wagon. The other good choice would be an old Mercedes wagon, either 1985 and earlier or the 1986-95 model.  I have heard the newer ones are not as solid cars. I hope this helps.
