Hi, Everyone. Lot of people are saying lot of things but on ground realities progress of Jatropha plantation in Pakistan is almost nothing. Many interested people want to do plantation but help and proper information is not available from any means. I’d only found practical plantation of two acres of Jatropha at research centre of Arid Zone in Bahawalpur, source of seed is from India, plants looks very good in growth at the age of six months. In last couple of month, I’d imported small quantities of Jatropha seed from Philippines, India, Thailand & Malaysia. All four varieties are planted in my small agriculture farm in Mian Channu, 90-kms from Multan. Seedlings will be shifted to open land (2m x 2m row spacing) from nursery within next two weeks. According to my initial test trial and observation seeds from Philippines had accepted the soil condition in best manner and growth is very fast and good. I’ll keep update this forum with my plantation results and meanwhile if anyone else is in progress of Jatropha plantation any where in Pakistan, please post your experiences for our guidance. Good to see that you are researching on Jatropha. I work @ National University of sciences & Technology (NUST) Islamabad and setting up a Model Jatropha Farm in Islamabad. I have got seeds from Malaysia. Planted in three different locations 1) Islamabad 2) abbottabad 3) Rahim Yar Khan. seeds plant on 1st of april 2009. I hope I am not goona make fools out of me. LOL If you have any input regarding germination, Quality of seeds, importers details, of any other information which can be a help making decision and getting govt involve in the process so we can take the project to the next level. I guess we all have to work together to make the economy better.

Dear Mr Hamid Abbasi
Hi, how are you.
Nice to read that you had planted JC (Jatropha Curcus) on three different parts of Pakistan, I’d Malaysian JC variety which is going very good now, as I said before Philippines JC plants are growing very fast, second is Malaysian and third is Thailand. Everything is so much new for all of us that we can’t make final decision that which seed source is good and which country seeds are best for Pakistan, according to my experiments in last 5-6 months, lot of factors should have to be considered for proper JC plantations.
Soil: In my experience if you have low soil properties land, not very fertile than you need lot of fertilizer (organic or chemical) and lot of water. The Myth about JC that it grows at any marginal land, without lot of water & fertilizer is not true, you have to give proper inputs like phosphorus for proper roots strength, nitrogen for plant & leaves growth. I mean to say the proper micro & macro nutrients as we do with other cash crops.
Seeds: Seeds are available from so many countries India, Australia, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Brazil, Ghana, Burundi, Belize, Zimbabwe, Singapore, China & USA, from so many exporters, still we don’t know who is selling good source seed, everyone claims his seed is best among others, will give good yield & growth. PSO in Karachi & Arid Zone in Bahawalpur are doing research on Indian source of seeds, which should give good results because we had almost same farming conditions as India.
Germination: In my experience seeds should be pre-soaked for at least 12 - 24 hours before putting them into nursery plastic bags for germination with mixture of good soil, sand & farm yard manure (cow dung slurry) with 1:1:1 ratio. Good seeds should come within 10 days.
Planting: Seedling should be at least 30cm tall to be shifted in open land and with row spacing of 2.5m X 2.5m. (640 plants per acre or 1600 plants per hectare)
I hope these suggestions will help but do keep it mind, these are my personal experiments and don’t blame me if anything goes wrong. Sorry to mention, JC plants seedling which was shifted to open land is growing good and after 5 months of plantation height is almost 16 to 18 inches. Pictures of JC plants will be added soon.
With Best Regards

Dear Mr. Makdoom & Shahid Mubeen
AOA. How are you?
I personally believe websites don’t show the ground realities, they only publish good stuff and hide the hard part of situation. To be honest not everything written on websites is true, you have to find out which one is right and which one is false.
I think soil, climate & area is not a problem of Pakistan, more important issues are agronomy of Jatropha Curcus (JC) plant and good quality seed source. One thing is sure JC is not easy task, at the movement, it is uphill task for Pakistani growers because we don’t have any reliable proper source of information.
You can always contact me email: email@example.com
